TALLAHASSEE, FL — Florida State Open Publishing is pleased to announce the release of the inaugural issue of the International Journal for Creativity Inside (IJCI). IJCI serves as the scholarly journal for the FSU Institute for Arts & Art Therapy with the Imprisoned (AATI). The journal is a partnership between Dave Gussak (FSU College of Fine Arts), John R. Whitman (Creative Prisons Project), Amanda J. Gardner (Southwest Correctional Arts Network), and an editorial board representing seven different countries.

An open-access, peer-reviewed journal, IJCI centers the role of creativity and artistic practice within carceral settings and brings together perspectives from scholars, practitioners, and people who have been imprisoned. It publishes theoretical, practice-based, and empirical research, practitioner-centered narratives, creative works, and reviews that engage with the role of art, art therapy, and creativity within the prison system.

The inaugural issue of the International Journal for Creativity Inside establishes a foundational framework for the role of arts and art therapy within carceral systems. It brings together international perspectives on arts programming, including music and puppetry initiatives in the U.S. and Greece, and approaches for educator training in New Zealand. Additionally, the issue combines academic theory and lived experience by featuring extensive reviews of resources alongside first-hand narratives of art creation.

“The journal represents an extension of the tradition of prison visitation, here with the purpose of engaging imprisoned individuals—violent and nonviolent alike—in the art of creativity.” — The Editors

The International Journal for Creativity Inside is now available to read for free online: journals.flvc.org/IJCInside/issue/view/6598. To explore the journal or answer the open call for papers for future issues, please visit the journal’s official platform at journals.flvc.org/IJCInside.
